Types of Music Videos

And Maroosh's Last Braincell

I had no idea that music videos had "types" until today... (5 seconds of silence for my illiterate existence) Anyway, now that I know, I obviously need to share my knowledge (just kidding, I'm only doing this because it's mandatory). To further detract from the "fun" of music videos, we must divide them into three major categories (because someone had too much time on their hands). Narrative, conceptual, and performative in nature.

Narrative Based

Narrative music videos, like short films, consist of a series of shots designed to tell a story. Some may include a brief artist performance, while others may include the artist acting rather than performing, and still others may not include any artist at all. The story being told by its protagonists is the main focus of narrative-based music videos. Some examples are:

Victorious by Panic at the disco
This video shows viewers how to celebrate the little things in life, such as winning a boxing match, helping a lady on the street, or even calling and fixing things with a loved one, because this way you'll always have something to be grateful for (this was a life lesson/TED talk by Maroosh, I hope you enjoyed it, and please don't forget to send me 50% of the money you saved from therapy now).
Lost & Not Found by Chase and Status
Chase and the Lost and Found Status: The artists do not appear in this video because we are following a single-shot film with actors. This video's structure explores a series of events that lead to a concluding moment, all of which support the song's structure.
Performance Based
A solo artist or a band performs to the camera in performance-based music videos. The goal is to focus on the artists and convey them to the viewing audience in a unique way. This category includes live performance recordings made with the intention of demonstrating an artistic talent not captured in the recording, such as capturing the energy and enthusiasm of live fans. This performance could include acting or dancing. It represents a singer's diverse range of abilities. The examples are:
 Cousins by Vampire Weekend
As each song line triggers a new shot, the band members' personalities and characters are presented to fans in a unique way. On a dolly, the band members move toward and away from the camera, surrounded by props, colours, and effects that convey the song's energy and pace.
Nothing Compares 2U by Sinead O’Connor
This video includes a close-up of the artist as well as some cutaway shots. When the artist looks down at 0:20, stares in contemplation at 0:35, appears condescending at 2:22, or cries at 3:55, her acting performance helps to support the lyrics.
conceptual Based
A concept-based music video is one in which the director has a single idea or theme that does not correspond to the song. one example being:
Fluorescent Adolescent by Arctic Monkeys.
The song is about a woman who fantasises about her childhood while living an unsatisfying and boring adult life. The music video, on the other hand, has nothing to do with the song. This is due to two groups of men, clowns and non-clowns, meeting at an old warehouse and fighting amongst themselves. The music video contains flashbacks of the group leaders, demonstrating to the audience that they were once friends but are now attempting to kill each other. The non-clown leader tries to run over the clown, but the clown notices oil leaking from under the non-car clown's and devises a plan to drop his lighter onto the floor.
Dance Based / Hybrid

Music videos are classified into three types: narrative, performance, and conceptual. Dance-themed music videos are not necessarily a type of music video format, but this page focuses on them in order to support a future project that will involve the creation of a dance-themed music video. The videos below feature dance as the primary subject matter, whether it is the expression of narrative through dance, a conceptual dance performance that does not feature the artist, or the artist dancing and singing to camera in a way that emphasises the dance, with physical movement playing a more dominant role in the artist's creative performance.

Praying by Plan B
This music video is classified as both narrative and performance based due to the presence of a story line and a vocal performance from the artist. The artist's external world is represented through dance, for example, the prisoners in the gym at 1:15, female visitors at 1:57, and the prison riot at 3:16. In these scenes, dancing is used to represent emotional tensions that exist in that environment, such as frustration, anger, and sexual temptation. The artist does not take part in the dancing that takes place around him while he communicates the lyrics in character to himself and his visitors.
Thriller by Michael Jackson
This video contains both a narrative and a performance. It tells the story of a zombie apocalypse and includes dancing and acting.
