Mise-en-scene

In the mise en scene of a visual work, all aspects of the set, including light, stage direction, location, and costumes, are calculated.

PROPS

So Myiesha and I didn't include many props because we didn't want the music video to be too difficult to understand. We will primarily employ:
1) a penguin representing the protagonist's sister because penguins represent hope and resilience in many parts of the world. They are also frequently associated with good fortune and luck.
2) A suitcase will be used to represent the fact that the protagonist is travelling. To demonstrate that the protagonist comes from a middle-class family, we will not use a high-end suitcase.
3) A bagpack, indicating that the protagonist is a college student.
4) books to supplement the fact that she is away for education
5) Fireworks, which will foreshadow the celebration and happiness that will occur later in the music video.
6) a keyboard
7) An aeroplane because she is travelling

MAKEUP

Overall, we wouldn't use much makeup because we want to show how tired the protagonist is, which Myiesha can easily do (thanks to the dark circles provided by media studies). However, we do want to include anime-style makeup to show that the protagonist is attempting to be someone else and concealing her true personality in order to fit in.

SETTING

I'll go into more detail about location and setting in my location post, but for now, we just want places that show normalcy. For example, we want the protagonist's room to be messy to represent the life of a college student as well as her headspace. The rest of the setting we want to shoot in streets so we can have scenery, and we also want to shoot in a home with a more warm aura so we can show both sisters. To add to the binary opposition, that house needs to be cleaner and more comfortable.

LIGHTING

We want more grey and dark tones in our music video where the scenes show the protagonist alone, then we want to add binary opposition to show the scenes of the sisters together with a more bright look. We want low-key lighting for the protagonist's scenes, particularly those in which she is crying and upset, and high-key lighting for the two sisters. We also want to add binary contrast by switching between night and day shots.

BODY LANGUAGE/EXPRESSIONS

So, for body language and expressions, we'd like to add binary opposition once more. We want to clearly show the difference between scenes where she is alone, such as depression and anxiety, and scenes where she is with her sister and feels free and happy (polar opposite moods).
